Hugh Symons' Longest Serving Employee Retires after 41 Years

Betty Wakeford retired from Hugh Symons at the end of September after 41 years of service.  Betty was originally employed as a punch card operator, she later went on to work on microfilm processing and most recently has been part of the document preparation team of the company.

Gifts and flowers were presented by friends and colleagues at Hugh Symons, with Production Services Director, Peter Wilson, reminiscing on former times at the company during a break from work for a celebration.

Betty is looking forward to a well deserved retirement but will be missed by everyone at Hugh Symons.

Contract Award for Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) is the main provider of mental health, learning disability, sexual health and drug and alcohol services for a population of around 700,000 living in Northamptonshire.

The impending move from the Princess Marina Hospital site, due to take place by the end of July 2011 was the catalyst for the Trust looking to implement electronic document management. With over 56,500 patient records (approximately 17 million images) to remove from the site, the Trust decided to issue a tender for document scanning through the Buying Solutions channel.

This route to tender was chosen because of the tight timescales and the need to identify an experienced supplier swiftly.  This programme of work will help the Trust to realise one of the key strategic objectives to eliminate paper based records and complement the Trust’s primary clinical system, ePEX.

Pamela Kumari, IM&T project lead, comments of the choice of Hugh Symons as the preferred supplier:

“Hugh Symons was chosen as our scanning service provider for this project for a number of reasons.  They offered the best value for money, which includes their viewing and retrieval software, provided free as part of the project package and they were able to evidence their extensive NHS experience.  Due to the tight timescales we are working to and the nature of the confidential records, we felt that Hugh Symons provided the required experience and assurance to complete this piece of work.”

Re-award of Scanning Contract for Yeovil District Hospital and Somerset Trusts

Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides acute care for a population of about 180,000, mostly in South Somerset, North and West Dorset, and parts of Mendip. Each year more than 30,000 patients are admitted as inpatients or day cases; more than 90,000 people attend outpatient appointments; and around 40,000 people are treated in Accident and Emergency

.Hugh Symons has provided scanning services for the Trust since 2003 and has recently been re-awarded the contract. The tendering exercise was forced to take place because of EU contract legislation which demands that public bodies reassess their contractual requirements on a regular basis.

Hugh Symons was re-awarded the contract on a number of different criteria, including cost, quality, security, experience within the NHS and level of service. The contract is not only for the scanning of medical records but also includes documentation from other departments including: Finance. Orthotics, Orthodontics, GUM, A&E and Payroll. In addition, the terms of the contract are also availble to other NHS Trusts in Somerset wishing to take advantage of Hugh Symons NHS Document Scanning Service.
